Real seat to blank spacing

Hi all!
Is there a rule of thumb in how much distance or space there should be between real seat and blank when putting real seat on? I bought a 18 real seat that is tight to the blank so I was told that's no good so I went up to a 20. Now
There is a larger space between blank and real seat. But I'm wondering what would be the down side to just glueing the 18 tight to the blank?

The seat should be sized to fit your hand. Then take up whatever space exists between the seat and the blank. There are many methods for doing this.

Mike,
As long as you can get a nice film of glue between the reel seat and blank, the reel seat will be well glued to the blank.

If you put on the 20, you will need to install an arbor of some material to fill the space between the blank and reel seat.

If you find that you can't easily slide the reel seat on the blank, you can use a reamer to ream out the reel seat a bit.

Be safe

Mike

If the # 18 reel seat fits your hand comfortably then you have the ideal situation. Bonding the reel seat directly to the blank is the ideal condition. You have essentially direct contact between the two components, there will no "insulation"' or "barrier" to dampen or interfere with the transmisson of vibration from the blank to the reel seat. Tight fit is OK you will still get a good bond line for a secure assembly. Go for it!
