West systems

Has anyone used West Systems epoxies for either carbon fiber handles or for thread finish?

Kind of curious about the 207 hardener, uv protection, non-yellowing and clear.

It yellows badly. UV protection is not there to keep it from yellowing, either in West Systems nor any other epoxy. The 207 yellows badly.

Have to go with Tom on this one. The West Systems epoxy you are considering will yellow.

In addition, it cures very hard and rigid. I think this is good for carbon fiber handles. But for guide wrap finish I would tell you it is no bueno.

The last issue of RodMaker explains what "UV Protection" means and it has nothing to do with keeping the epoxy from yellowing.

I use West Systems for all of my carbon grips. Carbon is not an issue for yellowing, so no worries there.

It is pretty thin, so even if it didn't yellow, it wouldn't provide much build as a thread coating...

West makes some of the best epoxy in the industry. Just use the right epoxy for the right application. I have used it for many years for different applications.

I have tried a lot of the different epoxies for carbon fiber grips. The epoxy I am now using is from Illstreets composites. It is a 2:1 ratio and no blush. It has good pot life, sets up HARD in about 18 hrs, and is thicker in consistency than rest of the non blushing epoxies I have tried. It is also less expensive than West or Riley Rods($24/qt epoxy and pint of hardener). I also get my foam from them. I would not use these epoxies for threads though. Mike says you can use his for that but I ahve not tried it.
