I do not know that much about surf or offshore rods, actually almost nothing! A friend of mine asked me if I would build him an eight foot all around surf / deep sea rod.......I have no clue on what to tell him.....I almost want to say that surf rods and deep sea rods are nothing alike!

Hi Robin,

There are some blanks that may meet your need. You do need to talk with your friend and determine how he intends to use the rod both off shore and in the surf.

If you can find them, the Lamiglas NZ 108 2XH (40-60 lb) and NZ 108 2XXH (60 to 100 lb) may meet your need.
These blanks work well for jigging and popping from boat and heavy plugging from shore. These blanks were discontinued by Lamiglas. You would need to check with them to see if any remain in stock.

Other blanks are the Kilwell GOM 3 (PE-10) and GOM-GT (PE-12). Target species are usually tuna and gt.
They are seen in the US under the trade name SYNIT. You might be able to find a source on the 360 Tuna forum.

You need to get him to be more specific on what he needs for a surf rod. My drum rod and my pompano rod are pretty different in capabilities. What are his intended species, method of fishing, etc. Good Luck.

I jig and surf cast in the northeast and I don't see how I could build a rod for both. Jigging I use 6'-7.5' blanks 6-12 Oz. and surf casting I use 9'-11' blanks 1-6oz. . You should build him 2 rods that are specific to his needs. Different grip lengths - guides- etc will make it difficult to meet both needs properly with one rod. Good luck. MH
