I need advise on building a bass rod on a MHX- MB843. I normally build musky and walleye rods and my question is how long a rear handle to build on split grip from butt to rear of reel seat. My gut feeling is 14" but I like longer butt handles. Just would appreciate some feed back from you bass guys. Thanks in advance.

Jeff,
If you look at the Mud Hole web site; they sell this rod as a kit: [www.mudhole.com] Give Todd a call at Mud hole and ask him the dimensions on this handle kit. --------------- If it was my rod, I would make the rear grip at 14 inches like you would. However, I expect that others might have different opinions. One thing is that with the 14 inch rear grip you should have a perfectly balanced rod that would work really well. Be safe Re: need advise

I personally bass fish with 12" to 14" grips on my rods but i believe the typical 7' bass rod would be in the 10" to 12" range. Re: need advise

I've built several of those. I like the balance and feel of 10.5" to rear edge of reel seat. Re: need advise

I like 10.5" on a bass jig rod, and 12" on a crank rod. Some tourney guys prefer shorter grips to avoid clothing interference during the battle. We're talking about the rear grip length - back of the seat to end of butt. Doesn't matter if it's a split grip or not.
14" is really long. I did 14" on musky rods. _________________________________________ "Angling is extremely time consuming. That's sort of the whole point." - Thomas McGuane Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 11/18/2014 08:57AM by Chuck Mills. Re: need advise

Whether it's cork or split grip I measure from the center of the reel seat to within 2 inches of the persons elbow. That seems to give enough handle to use a 2 handed casting method if desired and also enough length to lever the rod against the forearm if it is a large fish. Depending on the size of the person, that can vary the length. Re: need advise
