HELP!!! G.Loomis MB844 spinner BROKEN- Closest blank possible?
Posted by: Tony Hill (---.sub-75-197-86.myvzw.com)

Friends,
Sorry I haven't been here in a while, but life has been very busy, so fishing and rodbuilding are way down on my list.

But I DID get out fishing a couple of weeks ago. We were having a great morning, catching spanish macks, bluefish and red drum. My buddies had to go home for a kid party or something, so we dropped them off. About 10 minutes after they left, I realized that they had taken my favorite striper rod, a G.Loomis Mag Bass 844 GL3, custom wrapped as a SPINNER. They said they had gotten too far to turn around, but would return my rod soon.

Long story short, they closed the tailgate of their truck on my rod, shattering it. Now I have to replace it, and it appears that Loomis no longer sells those blanks.

In your opinion, what blank has the closest action ot the Loomis MB 844?

Thanks in advance.

-Tony

For a gl3 replacement my first thought would be either a rx7 batson or a mhx from mudhole

Tony,

I've never fished a G. Loomis MB844; but I don't think you'd be disappoint with the Mudhole HM-MB844-MHX. They are great rods. 'Have a nice tip with plenty of backbone.

You might want to check out NFC North Fork Composites , Gary Loomis's new company. Check out the MB705 or 709 IM these are equivalent to the old GL3 models.
Any questions shoot me an e-mail

First, let me say THANK YOU for the help.

I'm really bummed about losing my all-time favorite rod. I have had countless beautiful mornings and memorable days with that rod in my hand. It was one of the first rods I ever built, which doubles the loss.

The NFC is VERY interesting, because it's designed by G. Loomis, so I'm guessing the action is going to be very similar.
The MHX blank is also a MB, so it should have a similar taper.

How to decide? I wonder how the prices line up? Does anyone have pricing?

Thanks again!

-Tony

I'm going to give the MHX blank a try, due to the reasonable cost and lifetime guarantee. Just trying to decide between the 844 and the 845,

Has anyone used either of there blanks for casting 1-1/2 ounce jigs + plastics to stripers or similar fish?

Thanks

Ryan,
$50 would be sweet for an exact-match rod. What kind of warranty do they have? Any suggestions of where to buy?

Bill,
Yes, he's happy to pay for it. He put a tip guide on my old rod, and he says he loves it for Big Rubba. I think in the end, it's become equiv. to a MB785.

So all is well that ends well.

Oh man... I've got another problem. I love the grips by Fuji, that have the reel seat under the cork fore grip and look almost like a Tennessee grip when done. Same diameter from front to back. I always bought them from Custom Tackle, but C.T. is gone!

The grips I love came with factory-cut cork, for a perfect fit to the handle. But now, all the grips I see now have the fore grip that looks like a mushroom-not the same!

I'm rambling, here, but does anyone know what I'm talking about, and where to find some?

Yes It would be. Every one of our dealers has great pricing. I would go on our dealer section and see. Almost everyone is discounting these. As in terms of
Warranty, it carries our limited lifetime on the blank.
Good luck! For the price you can't beat it!!

Looks like the discontinued Rainshadows fill the bill here, but one of the best kept secrets in rodbuilding is the Amtak Bushido line of blanks - I've built two and they are simply great blanks. One is a MB 68 heavy .

very competively priced - blanks will perform with blanks that cost twice as much.
