Line rating on unknown blanks

I recently got a good buy on a bundle of new blanks as well as rods that need to be stripped and rebuilt. After stripping down the blank, if there is no model number visible or it is illegible, what is the best way to determine the min, max and ideal line weight for the blank? Theses are old Calstar, Sabre and Seeker glass blanks, so I will be stripping and revarnishing as well. I figure I should temporarily mount some eyes and pull on a spring scale, noting pull weight at different points in load-up. Any other approaches or suggestions? Re: Line rating on unknown blanks

There really isn't any particular line weight required or best for any such blanks. Generally pound test and sometimes even class line ratings are just an idea of what most fishermen might use on them.
My only suggestion is that you wouldn't want people to necessarily overline them, so you might just do some hand flex tests and try to get an idea of what line could be used that would break before the blank would in a deadlift situation. ................ Re: Line rating on unknown blanks

Shawn,
When I get into similar situations, I do exactly what Tom suggests. Most of us have a bunch of rods on hand. Do a deep flex on the test blank, and grab one of yours that you know the specs. Match your test blank to the nearest rod or blank that you have on hand and know its parameters. Good luck Re: Line rating on unknown blanks

Thanks Roger.
Appreciate the responses. Didn't know if there was some other trick, but this seems like a good approach Re: Line rating on unknown blanks

Another way to correlate these blanks with manufacturer recommendations is to do a CCS on them, only takes a few minutes. Do the CCS on similar blanks for which the line (and lure) ratings are known and then you can correlate the new blanks with them. I find the line ratings of manufacturers of no interest in selecting line, but it does give an indication of what the manufacturer believes the power to be. Lure weight range is for me valuable in selecting a blank for a particular use.
One problem with the usual CCS setup is that big piece of pegboard always taking up space. You can do it with a jig (to hold the blank or rod) you put into a vise and a measurement post (rod shipping tube standing vertical with a tape measure on it). Both are light and easily taken down and stored. If you are interested and need details, let me know and we'll get connected. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
