I ship my rods from TN to CA each year for a long range fishing trip. All of my guides are Fuji, some black and others a dark gray. In spite of my careful packing, several of the guides have places where the paint has chipped off. Short of replacing the guides, what paint would you folk suggest to touch these up. All of my rods are custom wrapped and I do my best to keep them looking good. Re: Guides need touching up

Black Sharpie Marker would be easiest.

Hello,
I have used Rustoleum gloss black, (or semi-gloss-can't remember which), to touch up the legs and feet of black Fuji aluminum oxide and hardloy guides. Never did an entire guide frame so can't speak for that process, but for touch ups: Clean the area you wish to have painted and lightly sand with fine paper. Punch (or cut) a hole in some thin cardboard just a bit bigger than the paint chip. Use blocks of wood, or have someone hold the cardboard, positioning the hole about 2 inches or so directly above the area to be painted. While holding the spray can 10-12 inches away, start your first pass on the cardboard and move the can evenly across the hole. The cardboard will help contain any over-spray. Shake the can every so often to keep the paint mixed. You may also try warming the can a few minutes, sealed in a ziplock bag and placed in a sink of hot (NOT boiling) water. Helps the paint flow smoothly and spray instead of "spatter". -chad Re: Guides need touching up

I would suggest a Black Paint Pen. Dries quickly and is better than the Ink in a Sharpie for what you are doing. Re: Guides need touching up

Guys, thanx for the replies. I'll probably go with a paint pen, but what do you think about a thin coat of expoxy over the top as protection? I bought some Devcon 2 Ton 30 minute epoxy to re oat some crank baits. This sets up pretty quickly. Re: Guides need touching up

You definitely need to apply a topcoat. But Devcon 2 ton epoxy adhesive is not the right product. You're going to find it bubbles easily and does not release them over the short set time. You want a rod building thread wrap epoxy for this job.
