When building a 7ft. spinning rod (Rx-7 ISB842 1/4-5/8oz. 8-14lb. line) what sort of casting distance should I feel is acceptable with 10 and 12lb.mono. I have guides attached with wire ties while testing. Mid priced guides starting with a #20 stripper, throwing a 1/4oz. bare jighead. I know what I think of it, just curious what some of you guys expect when you build. Thanks to all who reply. (Almost forgot Shimano Symetre 2500)

It all depends on your timing and how good you are at casting.

I generally consider that I have a good spinning rod that casts well if it casts for 200 feet.

Most casting is less than 100 feet, so normally casting distance is not an issue.

Where I live a foot equals 12". Just so we're on the same page.

Casting a weight at the bottom of the blanks power, with stiff 12 lb mono on a 2500 I wouldn't be upset if it went over 120 ft, might do better with 25mm first guide with 12 lb line, sometimes 12 lb. and a 20mm guide can be quite a bit noisier than a 25mm, leading me to believe I need to go bigger.

What is the casting weight you're working with? I would think that with a 3/8th to 1/2 ounce lure/plug, you should reasonably expect to see 110 to 120 feet with that length and power rod.

Being at the lower end of that blank's weight range, I would expect that built well, it should see around 100 feet. But I'm not familiar with that blank so this is only a very rough guess.

I have a RX8 ISB 842, which is a great rod, and I have built several for clients. If you are getting 100' with a cast you are doing fine. Line weight and type will have a significant impact on casting distance.

If you have the choker guide at 27 X and butt guide & transition guides so that they make a "bullseye" when looking down through them, you guides are spaced fine. The running guides should be spaced so the line smoothly follows the bend of the bank, (line makes equal deflection angles at each guide). Don't over think it, when you are satisfied with your efforts, wrap 'em, epoxy 'em and enjoy!
