You cannot go wrong with the Rx6 or 7 Batsons or the Pac Bay are decent yet tough.
Call Utmost and see what they have at a price you want to pay. Re: NEED A LITTLE HELP, 2 or 3 PICE FLY ROD

X2. Great rods for beginner or better. Nice moderate actions to learn on.

I would try to stay with something in a short length, 7'-6" or 8' unless he is big for a 10 year old. They tend to find it easier since they have smaller bodies compared to adults to learn to cast. Couple of years ago my nephews all around the same age as him got RX-6 7'-6" 5wts for starter rods. The boys learned real quick on them on how to cast and feel the rod load. Either Baston RX6 or Pac Bay Tradition are great blanks in the short lengths and they don't cost a lot either. Re: NEED A LITTLE HELP, 2 or 3 PICE FLY ROD

Yes, the RX6 Forecast blanks may be just what you need.

I think you would find 6wt a little heavy for a 10 year old. 4 or 5 better. Re: NEED A LITTLE HELP, 2 or 3 PICE FLY ROD

William,
For a starter it's hard to beat the reddington minnow. 8' 5/6 weight with a smaller grip for younger anglers. The whole outfit is $100. Just assemble and fish. Save the custom rod for the beginner who wants to go further into fly fishing and is sure he wants to go there. The patience level in younger anglers may turn some off with the chores in fly fishing and line manipulation. Gene Re: NEED A LITTLE HELP, 2 or 3 PICE FLY ROD

What is the intended fishing conditions and species of fish? I just wrapped my fourth RX6 in the 7'-6" size, 4 piece for 4wt line (you could fish it with a 5wt line). Very good with roll casting, which made it great for my 10 year old daughter way back when. And quite frankly, it's great for mature fisher-peoples too. I love it. It's not quite what you're asking for in size but I think you should consider it. The RX6 is also available as an 8 foot 2 piece for 5wt line but I have no experience with it. All good suggestions above.
I also know of a source for a cheap 3 piece fiberglass blank in the 8' for 5wt line size you requested. Not as high quality as the RX6 though and may need some trimming of ferrules to make it just right. eric fresno, ca. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/04/2014 04:49AM by eric zamora.
