Hey all,
Had a buddy drop off a rod for a new tip top and I'm still a little confused on tip top size. I read the article in the magazine but it never mentioned what the mm size would be for diameter of a rod. could you help with what size tip I would need for a musky rod with a 3mm tip on it?

Normally tip tops have a shaft size that is measured in 64th of an inch:

So, if you look at the closest 64th of an inch to 3mm, it is between 7 and 8.

So, either get a 7.5 64th of an inch or 8/64th of an inch.

like Roger said. the ring dia. is listed in mm but the tube size is listed in 64ths of an inch. You would need to do conversions if you measure the rod tip in mm. I use one of those plastic tip top guages they sell. It's relatively accurate in determining the tube size I need without doing much math. You could also look for a conversion chart online and it would tell you the mm to inches.

While a tip top sizer is probably the best way to measure a blank for the correct tube size,
if you have an SAE drill index that measures in 64ths, that will work also.

Thanks for the tips! I'm going to invest in a tube sizer... seems to make life easier.

The other thing that is helpful for me, is one tip top of each size. That way I can actually try them on and see what fits in the tips I use.

If he has a tip sizer, there are both make as well as female sizes for the tip top selection.

So, you just slip the tip sizer onto the rod and keep changing the holes until you find the one that fits perfectly. Then, use that size tip for a great fit.

I have both types of tip sizers, and I still find myself using actual guides. More visually oriented....
