Need to change name on a finished rod. Decal has one coat of finish under decal & one over. Should I just apply some heat from heat gun & carefully scrape the area that needs changing? Or is there a better way?

not necessarly better but maybe easier is to cover it with size A thread to match rod then apply a thin coat of finish new decal when dry and final coat of finish

Why not tint some epoxy black to cover up original label, then once dry apply new label and epoxy? may save a dab of time.

All of these ideas are fine. You have a lot of options here. Let me add one more.

Since you have a layer of epoxy under the current decal, sand down to the decal and through it, then smooth up that initial layer of epoxy and apply the new decal over that, in place of the original one, and recoat. That initial layer of epoxy gives you a little margin for error if you decide to sand off the top layer and decal.

if your decals are Clear i would after sanding it lay a thin coat on The sanded clear will show though a clear decal and make it look Foggy

Thanks for all the advice. At first I just tried to remove the name portion of the decal. Thus I put masking taps over the part of decal I wanted to save. The heated with heat gun on low setting. Used to back of a plastic knive to rub off the name. Decided at that point to remove the whole decal. Caught an edge on the decal with a razor blade & was able to lift the remaining decal off the rod with the help of the masking tape. Sanded the edges with 400 grit sandpaper being careful not to damage blank. Then recoated the area with epoxy. It's now ready for a new decal & once coated with final layer of expoxy will look like it never had an old decal.
