Hello Everyone,

I have a friend who would like me to refinish his old fishing rod. The rod was custom made for his father in the 80s and now the guide wraps are starting to chip. Since it has sentimental value he does not want to replace the guide wraps but instead wants to reseal them. I know that the threads are sealed with Urathane, such as U40 Perma Gloss, but not 100% sure what brand. Can I clean up the chipped spots and reapply Perma Gloss over the old urathane or do I have to take the guides off and rewrap the guides? My first thought was to fully clean the threads and then reapply over the old urathane but I am not sure the new Perma gloss will adhere to the old Urathane.

Clean them and lightly scuff with fine Scotchbrite and you should be fine to recoat. Be careful not to raise any thread "fuzz" on any bare spots, however.

A coat of color preserver before the finish coat could prevent bleed through discoloration on bare regular threads.

Did PG even exist in the 80's??
And PG goes on so thin that you will most likely get fuzzies.

Do you know what thread was used on this rod
Was it regular nylon -- with CP or Without CP ??
if you know the thread used you may be better to try to match the color using cp and no cp on a piece of scrap ???

Yes, it was around even a bit before then. Ralph actually developed it for use on bamboo rods, both for the cane and the threads, as an alternative to the less hard, less clear varnishes that often needed refinishing after so many seasons.

But it could just be any of the popular varnishes or lacquers available at the time.

I recently had a similar situation and convinced the client to let me strip the guides and rewrap and recoat the guides.

I think that he found that this solution worked out very well for him.

I would just tell him hey I'm going to try to add varnish to the threads and see what happens but if the coloring doesn't come out right I'm going to have to strip the rod down and rewrap it. Is this ok with you. If he says no then say you don't want the job.

I have been pushed on this matter. After seeing how good new varnish looks they end up sending me more rods to refinish. Not knowing this is the easiest work in the world.

just make sure you get paid for the work
