Hello again, this is part 2 on the question I asked earlier regarding wood handle grips. My buddy asked me to look at a 6' 6" glass rod. The bottom grip appears to be a solid piece of wood, the reel seat is metal, but there appears to be a pin holding it to the bottom grip, and above the grip, there is another pin that appears to be loose due to the rocking of the top wood grip. Here is where it gets weird, there is a 2 inch hook guard which houses the blank as it goes into the body of the top grip, now when you hold the blank and feel the swing in the seat components, the blank appears to be only in 3 inches into the top grip. Upon further inspection I could literally feel the rough edge of the blank hitting something in the wood grip. So I have a couple of questions, and I haven't found any info on turned wood grip installation, or repair on the web, Is it common for there to be so little blank in the top of a wood turned grip? I have seen turned wood grips where the blank goes all the way through. Also is it common for these style rods to have these big pins holding it together??? I again have hit a brick wall, My buddy said his father used it for salmon fishing, but I just cant see any way to do it.
Thanks again, Ernest Cameron Re: Wood turned grips followup

Many fishing rods were built with wood handles / metal ferrules most of them were made for saltwater applications. Some had and some did not have metal pins holding the metal ferrule to the wood. No, it is not unusual for the rod to be glued into the wooden grip/metal ferrule and 3 inches is also not "bad". I would disassemble the metal ferrule (top section); remove the loose pin; check to see if the rod blank was also "pinned" (IMO not a good idea) and glue everything back together using two part epoxy.
