Another guide spacing question

6 ft rod blank, was planning on using the new guide concept system. Reel is a Penn Battle 4000 and has a spool diameter of 49.5 mm. I multiplied it by 27 and it gives me 1336.5 mm. That's like 52.5 inches, when I measure from the top of the spool to that it leaves me with like 6 inches to the tip. I assume this system will not work for setting up this rod. So, where do I start from now?

Shawn,
Don't overthink the placement of guides.

There needs to be a guide on the rod at a place on the guide to allow the line to follow the curve of the bent blank.

As long as you have guides at those points you will be fine.

Place a butt guide at 20 inches from the reel seat and space out the guides as needed from that point to allow for smooth and even line flow whether the rod is straight, or fully loaded.

You can use various systems to compute the spacing and even sizes of the guides. But, simply put, if you use the least number of guides to allow the line to follow the contour of the unloaded or loaded blank you will be in good shape.

Also, check to be sure that the line flows smoothly through the butt and 2nd guide - both during light line retrieval as well as heavy load line retrival.

Good luck

Penn's are famous for not playing by the rules. Try the table edge for stripper position.

Did I miss how to do that somewhere?

This doesn't work for me. When the reel is lined up on the table none of the guides or rod hits the table edge. Everything is like 1 1/2" away from the edge.

Shawn, the location of the choker guide is determined by the spool diameter. If you use a larger reel on a shorter blank the choker guide is going to be closer to the tip. In some cases the choker might actually be the tip. There is nothing wrong with any of this and everything is working as intended.

Put your choker guide six inches from the tip. Count on a total of seven guides on the rod. If I had one six inches from the tip I'd add another between it and the tip. The butt/stripper guide size is half the spool, so high frame 25 mm for you. To recap, two guides same size as choker, one 25 mm guide....and four guides between them. Follow the article. Tie a string to axle of reel...have it go through choker, next guide, and tip.....slide the 25mm guide up the blank untill line touches outside edge of frame....repeat with next guide, probably a high frame 16....etc, etc:).....all depending on line/knots, strength of rod, and static testing. In the end you are shooting for that bullseye picture.

This didn't work for me with the kit I bought. (The bullseye picture) This is the kit, [www.mudhole.com]

Would a 20 work to put between the 25 and 16?
