Epoxy or PVA for gluing rings together

Hi Guys

I have always turned my grips on a mandrel and have glued the cork with PVA. I have never had a grip separate following the normal protocols for PVA and timber. I have then secured it using epoxy to the blank. I have set up my lathe to turn on the blank and obviously have to secure the rings with epoxy to the blank. I'd like to use it to secure the rings to each other as well but know that clamping pressure can squeeze epoxy out of joints leading to a weak bond. Is epoxy suitable for the purpose.

Yes epoxy is very suitable for this purpose. However, so are the PVA glues, particularly those such as Titebond II and III. Any good PVA listed as being waterproof is more than sufficient. Even those that aren't labeled as waterproof seem to do fine, as long as you don't submerge the rod for long periods of time. And few do that, unless they toss one in the drink and can't retrieve it.

Ben,
If I build a grip off the rod, I always use a wood glue like titebond III to glue the rings together.

Then, I use epoxy to glue the built up grip to the blank.

But, if I am turning the rings and grip on the blank, I use epoxy for the entire job. i.e. gluing the rings together and glue onto the blank at the same time.

I just think that epoxy does a better job of adhering the grip to the blank, so I prefer to use one glue for the entire job.

Be safe

The squeezing out is not a problem as the thin layer left is very sufficient to make a solid bond. Many builders use epoxy for this purpose.

Just wipe the excess off with a paper towel and alcohole
