Building my 1st fly rod. It is 11' 7wt. Do I use the same "straight-edge" method I've used to set the stripping guide on spinning rods? I think I can figure out the rest, but advice is always appreciated (i.e. usually needed).
Thanks Harry Harry T. Bell Re: fly rod guide setup help

Harry,
No - not at all. Stripper distance from butt is personal preference. Mine on my 11'0" rods are at 39" from butt. I think it allows for a better flow of line out of my stripping basket. If you don't use a basket it is still a better flow of line. Some place the stripper so it can be reached while holding the rod in natural position. I do not. If, for some reason, I cannot reach the stripper to capture the line I simply move my rod hand back until I can. Technically, the line should never be so slack that you can't reach it naturally. But if you flub a cast I can see where you might need to reach for the stripper to grab the line. So just move the rod back. Regards, Herb Re: fly rod guide setup help

I just built an 11' 6-7wt. switch rod for myself and the stripping guide is 35" from the center of the reel foot. Works great for me. Re: fly rod guide setup help

what I know [ very little ] the stripper guide is at least longe than you can reach when you are stripping line , this is so you can't grab the guide just a little beyond the tips of your fingers when holding the rod , but as you can see there can be a few inches differance in the distance,
this is real inportant with a person with long arms , an not so to a person with short arms, my 2 cts William Sidney AK Re: fly rod guide setup help

Harry,
Calculate or measure the distance from the rod tip to the center of the reel seat. Mock -up your grip butt and reel seat positions if necessary. Multiply this dimension by .707 this should locate the stripper from the rod tip and take into account personal preference of fighting butt length, reel seat length and grip length. Movements plus or minus 2 inches won't impair the results. Gene Moore Re: fly rod guide setup help

IMHO Herb, the first response has it right. It's more about ergonomics than anything else. If this rod is planned for really aggressive fish, like king salmon , steelhead, or bonefish, or other salt species, I would not put a hook keeper on it. With these fish, I don't want anything that might catch a loop of lilne as they take off. No time to react. Use the frame of the first guide. Re: fly rod guide setup help
