I'm wondering of there is a source for old/vintage-style all-metal aluminum fly reel seats in the down-locking style. The newer machined seats are too bulky for what I'm looking for and are usually up-locking anyway. I've found some older all metal seats listed as spinning reel seats on an @#$%& site, usually lacking a cap on the end. Is this what older fly rods used long ago? is there a NOS source or anyone manufacturing this style these days? I've searched through a number of sources to the left but my eyes are starting to fry. thanks.

I used to use such seats. I have one that has a red barrel and the hoods and knurled knob are black. The rear hood is also the cap on the butt of the reel seat. I haven't seen any of these reel seats for years. The one I have is from a rod that I had built, but was broken. We used a liquid rod cement that easily melted when gently heated. I did use a down locking reel seat similar to that from Pac Bay a few years ago. It had metal hoods (I think made of nickel silver) and a wood barrel. You might check their catalog to see if they still make them.

Older fly rods used both up and down locking reel seats depending on the preference of the maker and the end user. Some reel seats were made with a plug that could be inserted in either end of the seat depending on how the rod maker wished to use it. I have some of both types. There are also skeleton ring and cap seats that allow the rod builder the option of making an insert of cork, wood, horn, or some other material. Some reel seat inserts were machined with a recessed area for the reel foot to sit in. There was an is no set way of making the fly rod. It gives the maker 100's of options.

Eric, I have a lot of those old style seats in various colors and sizes. Also the checks to finish off between the seat an dork. Let me know if you need some.

Gary, how to you mount the dork on the rod? :>) LOL Just funning!

We'll first you use your iPad, then add big fingers. Next try typing while watching Capt. Phillips . Add in a bit of auto correct and you get dorks instead if cork. Anyway, I've got seats if Eric or others need them.
