Just getting underway on my first rod building project and wonder if two part epoxy is going to be ok for gluing rubber winding check and butt cap? Does not seem like it will stick. Is there something else I need to buy to glue these on?? Re: glue for rubber parts

clean both well with DNA and let dry. Epoxy will work just fine. Re: glue for rubber parts

Hal, although epoxy will work just fine, I use a product (no mix) called Liquid fusion. Available at hobby/craft stores. Works great for what you wish to do. Re: glue for rubber parts

Clean the rubber pieces with alcohol and scuff thoroughly with very fine sandpaper or scotchbrite.
RodBond works well. GOOP is really pretty darn good on rubber pieces. I would guess that more rubber butt caps come loose on custom rods than anything else. They can be tough to adhere. ................. Re: glue for rubber parts

Goop is a great idea!! Shoe repair shops use it to replace shoe soles. At least they used to before we became a throw away society. very strong bonding. Re: glue for rubber parts

Hal,
Out of curiosity, is the gluing surface of the butt cap flat, or does the butt cap fit over the end of the rod. I have made many butt caps out of rubber chair leg tips. When I do these, I turn the butt of the butt grip down to from a tenon. Then, I turn down the outside of the rubber butt cap to fit the outside of the turned down butt grip. When the butt cap slips on the butt of the rod, there is very little extra needed to keep the cap in place. I just use 5 minute epoxy and it works very well. If the butt cap is flat, I just roughen up the glue side of the cap and use 5 minute epoxy to glue it in place. It works very well. Be safe Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
