Great articles in the latest Rodmaker mag! Have ? about Improved Tennessee handle

I am really enjoying the articles in the latest Rodmaker magazine especially the improved Tennessee handle and the laser grip inlays!

Is the Plasti-dip spray more durable than using heat shrink over the 8 lb density foam?

What is the durability/ strength difference vs a carbon skinned handle with a 6 lb core?

Thanks

You might get by with a 6lb core, but the weight difference across the length normally employed may not be enough to warrant it.

I haven't tried heat shrink over it. As long as it has some "give" in the surface you should be okay.

I should of also stated that I was thinking of incorporating this technique for a surf rod handle since my St Croix Avid has a slim butt at .8 inch. Then have a Fuji plate reel seat attached on to the foam handle.

Will the plasti-dip provide too much cushion to use a plate reel seat that is thread wrapped on?

Will it be better to use an abalone sheet underneath the plate reel seat area and then mask it of with painters tape to spray with the plasti-dip?

Looking for options that provide more durability than cork tape, less rough than the black surf grip tape and be able to build up the diameter to feel comfortable. Sounds like this technique might suit my build well.

Thanks Tom!

How much cushion you get depends on how many coats you apply. You can go thinner or thicker.

Another product that offers the same thing, but much more quickly, is a Rust-O-Leum roof sealer. But it only comes in black.
