Several variables there. Would depend on the type and size of blades on the spinner bait, the weight of the spinner bait and how you are retrieving the spinner bait when fishing it.

My experience indicates that any fast or extra fast blank of the length you want (fishing with rod down? Maybe 6 1/2 feet is long enough) and designed for the lure weight you want will do fine on spinnerbaits. Keep in mind that 1/2 oz spinnerbaits are actually a little heavier than 1/2 oz. 1/4 heavier than 1/4, etc. Some believe that the extra fast action will cut down on "helicoptering" of spinnerbaits. Maybe. A major factor in going fast or extra fast is that you don't want a rod to slowly load up on weeds, and you want to be able to snatch the spinnerbait free of the weeds when retrieving.

A friend wanted a spinnerbait casting rod for smaller spinnerbaits and I made him a casting rod on this blank":

XSB802.75 TC 6'8" 1 6-15lbs 3/16-5/8oz 0.465 5.0 X-Fast M 1.53oz Finesse spin/tubes/jig worms $122.72

With micro guides, he LOVES it. He uses it for the smaller spinnerbaits and shaker baits (blade in front of weighted skirt).

I'm a fan of a not well known blank, the Lamiglas IMS 843. A Todd Vivian find.

I have made several out of XMB783, RX8, 6'-6" for several guys who really like them for spinners.

If you are looking for a little more economical blank try the same blank Michael mentioned above except in a ISB805.75. It is an RX7. I use one for my own personal spinner bait rod... It works for a little lighter baits (1/4 oz). It is classified as a spinning rod blank but I put a casting reel on it. The blank does not know any difference. It's a little softer but picks up a lot of back bone about 33% into the blank. A compromise of casting ease with someback bone for a hard set. It was the 3rd rod I built. I took the traditional quides off and put a set of Alps micros on it. Even that difference is noticable.

I normally throw 1/4 oz to 1/2oz spinner baits and retirve them just under the surface. I may snag it on the grass or need
to jerk it free.

The XSB802.75 seems like a really light balnk for a spinner bait. Isn't that blank usually used for drop shot rig or a shakey head?

Thanks for your inputs.

SB812-Blend-MHX works great for that particular technique of spinner bait fishing. Two other general purpose blanks that are very versatile for fishing a spinner bait, are the MB843-MHX or a shorter version, MB783-MHX.

Mike
the XSB listed above has a little thicker butt section in the RX7. I can't say about the RX8. I would say it is a little light for a 1/2 oz spinner.

I would second this option for the 812. If the person is tall they may want the longer 843 but not necessarily. I am 6'6" and think the 812 is a nice blank, but if you know you are around a lot of grass most of the time then perhaps your best bet is the 843 or 783, but you will definitely give up some of the tip action for casting.

Hi Mike,

Give the new American Tackle Bushidos a look, they are my favorite blanks by far. I've been using them for over a year now and have never been more confident in promoting a blank line, I would put them up against anything on the market. They are the culmination of design and manufacturing experience combined into a line of blanks that can deliver performance and insure durability. Although they are relatively new to the market, they’ve been tested in the field by AT staff, ProStaff, professional guides, rod builders and even fished (to victory) in tournament settings. All have been impressed and our sales show the popularity growing rapidly.

My picks for the spinner bait rods would be our spinner bait, SB69/6-10 & SB69/10-15. For heavier/larger applications one coiuld go with MB73/10-20 & CB72/10-20.

I hope you'll consider them

Best Regards,

Just tape wrapped my first Bushido blank, a CB 68, not what I would suggest for spinnerbaits, but I wanted it for small rattletraps (bait casting). The blank is really light, exactly the weight Amtak advertised, very handsome in what I would call a satin dark charcoal color (matches well with the new Fuji casting seat), test casted wonderfully with a Fuji micro setup, and feels very sensitive in the hand. On this blank the recommended tiptop was a little snug so I went up 1/2 size.

I just know it's going to be one of my favorite rods for its intended use (and for light cranks, too). I would not hesitate to try one of the SB's for spinnerbaits.
