I have a Canon printer and i would love to make some peel and stick decals for the rods i am going to build. What kind of paper do i need and what do i need to know about printing my own decals? any help would be appreciated as i know nothing about it! Kevin, call Decal Connection. they sell the paper you need for printing your own decals and would be happy to answer your questions. They are a sponsor here and are to the left. They are really good people. I recently started doing business with them and highly recommend them. Frankly, dealing with them is easier, and for me, more cost effective than doing my own.

Do a google search for Papilio for media. For most decals the white vinyl is my favorite, but under certain conditions, clear works well (you have to have designs and colors that give very high contrast ratio-not as critical on the opaque, white background, vinyl media). You have to experiment and adjust. Keep in mind, your printer will not do metallics. White is made by leaving the area with no color (with the white media-with clear you get no color if the design on the computer shows white). Any graphics program will work, but all do take some practice and getting used to. Obsolete models of graphics programs usually are available on @#$%&, cost little, and for this job work as well as the latest versions. You may have to manually set your printer settings for color balance, intensity, and contrast. Matching the background color to the blank is often difficult except for black and slate colored blanks. Use the high quality setting on your printer. I cover the decals with Papilio clear UV fixative/spray before epoxying.
Rodmaker magazine has covered this in very good detail a couple years ago, if I remember right. The link takes you to a rod with both clear and white media utilized. [www.rodbuilding.org] Re: What kind of paper for decals?

Michael,
Can you be more specific as to which products you are using. I've looked at the Papilio website and there are so many different types of similar products I'm not sure which is the right one for rod building. Also, are you using laser or inkjet? The do have what they call a Waterslide decal. Have you tried those? I'd prefer to to use the color laser products, I'm not sure I've even got an inkjet anymore. Thanks, Steve Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
