Painting Handles and fore grips

I have a question for you guys. I got the recent Rod maker mag. On the cover they have painted handles are these more for show or will they hold up in the real world? If they do hold up to normal use how do they do that? Also can it be done on any matter such as cork,Eva?

The extent to which something is durable has a great deal to do with the material it's been placed upon and the coating you put over the top of it.

Ross Pearson of Minnesota constructed those rods. He painted over cork, which can indeed be dented, cut, etc., so in extreme cases the durability of that paint will rely upon the durability of the cork. The same process over the top of a carbon skin grip, or plastic, etc., will result in greater durability, of course.Coating it with a clear finish will go a long way towards making it resistant to common scuffing and scratching.

Ross has not yet written an article detailing his exact painting process. I'm hoping he'll do that in the near future.

Thanks Tom for the information and this great forum. Would you go fishing with something like that? I would build one for a show piece.I would be to afraid to actually fish with it.They look like they should be on the wall and I mean that out of respect to the artisan.

Haven't painted handles but did a plug fore grip. Basically turn wood to shape. Now the harder part to drill a hole through to fit blank. I find that drilling 1/8" through middle then use Irwin bit with screw tip it will follow the original hole.. The rest prime with white then color of choice. can check out fore grip on photo page and member list..Wood used was red cedar.

Ross uses an epoxy for the top coat of the painted handles. The finish on the grips is as durable as the finish on the threads are. He is truly an artist and his faux techniques are very detailed and unique.

I have painted cork once, it was quite easy.

I first applied epoxy to the cork, scuff the surface, prime, paint, cover with enother coat of epoxy.

I`m not sure if this is the proper way. I have never heard that it did not hold up.
