My 1st Lathe!

Hey Folks,
Well, I did what I said I wouldn't do, and put togrther a lathe using my drill.
50 plus yr. old drill no less. All I used was a cardboard box, duct tape some styrofoam from a shipping box and a piece of terrycloth.
The mandrel is a 24" length of threads-all. Total cost under 5 bucks. It ran true and worked great!
Getting to LOVE rod building.

Hey, I need a picture. I robbed some aluminum castings and a smooth rod out of an old pneumatic door operator for mine. Bolted it all down to a 2" by 8" and used a cordless drill. Got a little carried away and forgot to oil it and it seized up on me. Total cost was zero...LOL!

My home made lathe, not my original idea, copied from someone elses picuture. Cheap but it works. Bought a dedicated drill ($25) and hose clamp ($1.50), rest were scrap materials laying around, about 2hr time and "away-you-go"

Took it apart after I finished. When(if) I make again I'll try to send a pix. Not the most adept at that however.

John, I am working on building something similar to what you have. I attached my drill in the same manner and have been using 1/4in all thread rod for a mandrel. I was wondering if you used a bearing inside of the metal piece that you attached to the wood at the tail of the lathe.

Ben,
Just drilled a hole in aliminium plate, slightly larger than 1/4" allthread mandrel. A bearing of some kind would be a worthy improvement. Let me know what you come up with.
