I have been playing with some little hooks trying to figure out how to inlay them into a butt wrap. I can't find a way to stick them long enough to get them to stay long enough to get a coat of finish over them. even tried crazy glue, but that seems to turn white on the thread, I even tied to lay them into some semi-dry flexcoat, but this turned into a big mess real fast. I know that this has been done, because I have seen it. My question is, what kind of glue will work, and not show up under the finish?

try using 50/50 mix of brilliance CP and water. If necessary, take a hair dryer to "quick set" it, but I would still allow it to dry 24hours before coating with finish.

Use nothing. Well, almost nothing. Apply a thin coat of finish (Flex Coat, U40, whatever) and stick them in. The don't fall out. I don't know what size hook you are using, but I've done this with size 18, 20 and 22. The finish is viscous enough to hold them in place while that first, thin coat dries.

If I were trying to do this,I would get the finest white silk thread possible.Then I would unravel the thread into individual strands.My next step would be to tie a very fine strand to each end of the hook.I could then lay the hook in its final resting position over the wrap.The thread strands could then be taped in place beyond the edges of the wrap.Finish can then be applied.Once the finish has cured,I would then cut the threads inside the edges of the wrap and apply a final coat or two over the whole wrap again.By using a thin finish,the silk thread disappears into the background thread color.

I've done this once or twice. It's a neat idea, and once was a request from an angler who was a fish hook collector. I did this by using 5 min. epoxy, once the hook was set it was just a matter of applying about 4 coats of finish to get it 'imbedded'. These also can look pretty neat at the back end of the butt cap embedded in epoxy.

Article somewhere, I cant' remember now (half timer's ,ya know) I saw the process of froming casts from certain epoxies that harden with the hook embedded. These were shaped and fitted as the butt cap. Very attractive, and a good method for placing 3 D objects into a thicker and clear presentation such as the end cap.
