i have an "old" i think surf rod, 8'6" , (Gladding South Bend, white knight ) fiberglass fishing rod, below the name is 7-229-386 (8'6")

sure would like some info on this rod, i read that Gladding bought South Bend in 1954 but now its back to South Bend .

i am planning on rebuilding this rod as it belonged to an old Spanish man, his son gave it to me after the old man passed from down the block .

we never spoke but he would always wave to us as we would pass by going fishing.

i did read something about 1954 but dont know for sure?

South Bend Bait company was started by FG Worden around the turn of the 20th century in South Bend, IN. They made mostly lures and then branched out into rods and reels in the 1940s. They sold to Gladding Corporation in 1958. Gladding divested most of its many outdoor brands in the 1980s and somebody bought South Bend and today imports fishing tackle made overseas. Thats about all I know about them.

They used to make spun aluminum fishing rods. The blank was actually spun aluminum..

Yes they made spun aluminum rods they are kind of neat ,but become brittle with age, I ' ve restored one or two a while back.Mate them up with a nice South Bend reel they make great "wall-hangers" Larry
