Looking for blank suggestions to be used for crappie fishing. Would be using 4lb to 6lb monofiliment line to cast small jigs with a small bobber. Blank could be 6 to 7 foot. Have been told that fly rod blanks are very good for this type of rod but do not know which weight would be best suited. Can't help but think that a blank made for spinning purposes would be better than a fly rod blank being used as a spinning rod. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, David Re: Blank suggestions - for crappie

The fly blank will never know that it is being used for a spinning rod. In fact, it doesn't know that its a fly blank! I use 'em all the time for this. I like a 6 weight for this but you might want to go lighter depending upon the jig or lure size you will use. I use a 9 footer and you seem to want shorter so this may or may not be the best idea for you. I have to think that there are some pretty good ultra to light power blanks in the 6 to 7 foot range made specifically for spinning use. Check the catalogs. Surely someone still makes these animals. In the ultralight class you could try the Lamiglas GFW 721L: 6" long, 2-6 lb line for 1/16 to 1/4 oz lures. The PFW 721L in the Perigee series might be even better. If you want to go a little heavier you might try the PFW 721M, 781M (6 1/2') 841M (7') for 6-12 lb line. I have been very pleased with the Perigee blanks I have used. G Loomis SR 841. Very nice Crappie rod. I have been considering trying a fly rod and I would be trying a 5 or 6 weight rod. Re: Blank suggestions - for crappie

I enjoy light and ultralight fishing alot and I own several rods for 2-6 lb range. I built a snapper rod from a 8' 6" 4 wt fly blank cut back to 7' 6" with single foot guides many years ago and this is the first rod I reach for whenever I go light. The rod has a moderate to slow action & can handle lures up to 3/8 oz without problems. I have a Shimano 1000 sized spinning reel loaded with 2 lb Stren and this combo will cast a 1/4 oz Hopkins Shorty or a Kastmaster a country mile and you will cover alot of territory. Catching an 8", 9", or larger snapper on this is like catching a whale. You have to use all your fishing skills just like catching the big ones and it's loads of fun. I hope you go ahead and build that rod so you can have as much fun as I do. Re: Blank suggestions - for crappie
