I have been using A size thread for my guide replacement on various types of bass rods. Some Trimar thread as well.

What do the movers and shackers in the custom rod business use?

What do build up rod maufactures such as G. Loomis and St. Croix use?

This covers a large range of rods from 6' spinner bait rods, Crankin sticks and flippin sticks as well. I have not seen a lot of comments covering this subject.

I see no reason to ever use anything bigger than A on freshwater (and many salt) rods

I use A on my salt water rods.

IMO, there are applications for 6/0 through EE. I have used each size for various reasons. The bulk of my custom work is done with A and D.

As far as factory rods, I do a lot of repair work and I see lots of C and D thread being utilized ... even on lighter stuff.

I'm definately no mover or shaker but I use mostly size "A" but like Jim I have use for
various sizes.

Specific to your question - production bass rods

Many production companies producing high quality fishing rods are faced with many problems that may not be present in the custom area. Guide manufacturers may advise not to break the foot coating barrier on guide frames by grinding due to corrosion issues related to warranty. If guide prep is not performed A thread is difficult for good transition. Thread size affects wrapping speed. Thread size effects the thread ramp up on guide feet and the ability to pack to prevent "peek through" upon use due to under finish stretch. Outwrappers are not required to "burnish". Specifically to the GLoomis question Thomas Thornhill posted a couple of days ago that B nylon was the primary wrapping thread.

I build mostly Bass rods and my thread box is full of "A" . I think it just makes a neater wrap.

Was told by the wrappers at Loomis many years ago that they use "B" thread on the factory rods.

A on single wrap, or A as a base wrap and C or D as overwrap.
