Painting Graphite Rod Blanks

I currently have a student taking my rod building class that instead of
building my default more basic class project rod wanted to build a Batson
RX7 Swimbait 7' 10" 1 piece, 25 - 45 line, 3 - 8 oz. lure matte clear finish
for the class project. He does a lot of fishing in Arkansas for BIG Striper
Bass. To my surprise he asked me if it would be possible to paint this
blank to add some color to it before he learns how to build it up in the
class. Considering the challenge he will have on the rod itself, I think
painting the blank is a little much for his first rod but he still would like to
know. Graphite rod blank painting is an area I have not gotten into doing.

So, my question is would painting be OK for this blank and what would be
the recommended method, preparation and type of paint to use? Any help,
suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Clyde Alho

Hi Clyde,

This should keep you busy for awhile! [rodbuilding.org] Over 400 post dealing with painting blanks. It's a lot more common (and eassier) than you might think

Even though I am still pretty new at building rods, I think that I have found my best area in painting of the blanks and reel seats. I have several methods for painting blanks, there is one that I have in mind for a beginner like him. If you want me to explain in detail, e-mail me and also let me know if he plans on just painting it one solid color or plans on doing something artistic. I look forward to hearing from you if you decide you want the information. jwgottabass@yahoo.com

An easy way I have found is to wet sand it with 500 wet sand paper. Dry well !! Then spray an Auto paint like DuPliColor. Two good coats. Check for coverage. I use the sunlight. Let dry at least 24 - 48 hours. Wipe off for dust, then coat with a nice coat of Permagloss. Permagloss is a little tricky. Ya got to be fast with this stuff.

Some use an auto spray clear.
