micro tip sticking.....

Hey everyone,

Well i just finish my first micro wrap and i did a Forhan spiral. The rod performs well except for one little glitch. The size 4 Baston tip seems to be sticking a bit. When i am reeling line it i can hear a rubbing/ almost scratching sound. When i release my spool and let a weight drop the line is catching at the tip and creating a little slack between the tip and first guide, and a little twitch of the wrist allows the line to continue going out. at the time i have 20lb mono on the reel due to where i am presently fishing, but i am about to put some 12lb test on it in the neat few days. Any ideas as to what is causing this problem, and ideas to resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Stu

Stu,
This is something I have written about on here quite a bit, and it took me most of last season to figure out. What is happening is the large dia. mono takes an outward curve when it bends through the tip. This bend pinches in the small ring and rubs the blank. With any mono/copolymer/flouro over 17lb. you should use a size 5 or larger ring tip. Your problem will be gone immediately.

Stu,
You will not have a problem with braid since it is so limp, and generally of a smaller diameter. Also, I am NOT suggesting you go with lighter line, just a larger tip top. I still use size 3 guides on my flipping sticks w/ 20lb. mono, I just run a size 6 tip on the rod. Works great.
