For the price you need to look hard at the Rainshadow. I got one yesterday (8-wt) and am very impressed with the power and quality. Beyond that there is always the Loomis GL3 and St.Croix SCIV models which are known to be great blanks. It doesn't seem possible to go wrong with any of these.

Chris-

I'm not sure if either one of these will fall in your price range, but I have had extremely good luck with both the Lamiglas Ti2000 9' #9 and the Graphite USA 9' #9. I have built one Ti2000 and three of the GUSAs - all in the 4-piece configuration. Both blanks are very pleasant to cast but will quite literally boom out line. They both also have extreme lifting power. The Ti2000 is defnitely the lighter and faster of the two. The GUSAs are just tough as nails and that should probably be a consideration in any rod that gets fished mostly out of a boat.

I personally have not built the Rainshadows or the SCIVs in the heavier weights, but I have heard good things from people who have proven their opinions spot on more times than not. I have a Lamiglas Perigee 7/8 that I absolutely love but I have not tried the heavier weight there either. You should probably consider all of them. I hope this helps. Good luck!

I just delivered a 9'8 wt 4pc built on a Rainshadow blank. The customer was a friend of mine and we took it out for some on the water eval. The blank is great. Cast like a dream and throws line a mile. And in your price range you could get two.

Todd - is that a typo?

I'm sorry, Todd. I must have misread your email. I thought you said that the Esprit #9 had a butt diameter of 0.49". Come on - you don't roll any fly blanks with a butt diameter less than half an inch!!! HA!!!

Chris, just to post one last note on these blanks....Ron Arra has been out for the past week and he was able to spend several days fishing this new series of rods. He was very excited as to how well they would perform for Stripers. Although he was fishing for real fish...<wink>
