Handle Problem

Built myself a baitcaster a couple of years ago and made the cork handle the same way I've been building them for years with all burl cork rings glued together with a water resistant wood glue. Carried it to the river inside the rear window of my car so it got fairly hot. When I fished it I noticed the handle would twist back and forth slightly. When I got it home and back in the cool basement it wouldn't twist. Since then I've noticed it twisting on a few other occassions. Can I remedy this without tearing the entire rear and fore grips off? I was thinking about drilling small holes through the cork, but not into the rod and using a syringe to squirt epoxy into any spaces between the cork and the rod blank. Any suggestions are appreciated. Re: Handle Problem

Eric, This is what I would do.I would leave the rod out in the sun so the handle would get warm and soft.A hair dryer should do the job also.Once softened,I would twist the handle off the butt. Next,I would pop the grip in the freezer to chill. While waiting for that to take place,I would remove the remnants of the glue from the blank COMPLETELY. By now,the glue inside the grip should be hardened off.I would then use a drill bit or reamer to SLIGHTLY enlarge the inside diameter of the grip. This is to remove any trace of the glue from the inside of the grip.I would be very careful to keep the bore of the grip straight and centered without removing too much of the cork.I would then use some alcohol to clean the inside of the grip thoroughly.Once I felt the grip was "decontaminated" and dried,I would build up the butt with thread or string to act as a bushing for the slightly enlarged I.D. of the grip. Then, using a quality epoxy;I would proceed to permanently cement the grip in place. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.Whatever you do. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
