RM article, ferrule building

I have been using the O'Quinn technique to fix broken blanks using the fiberglass blank pieces. I am looking forward to trying to build ferrules using the technique as outlined in the lastest issue of RM. I realize that you can only use fiberglass for these jobs. I have been trying to pick up old fiberglass rods at garage sales to cut up for this purpose. There are
some overseas made blanks, with no markings to tell what they are made from, that I can't tell if they are fiberglass
or graphite, or whatever. Is there anyway to tell what a blank is made of by looking at it? Color of the fibers when cut?
Thanks,
Buzz

I think that fiberglass will leave white residue when cut and graphite leaves black or gray residue. I am not positive on this, but think it's in the ballpark.
