Assuming you mean "crappie" the fish and not "crappie" the quality, I would look to RX6 series from Batson (also called Forecast series). They are inexpensive but good quality blanks for budget projets. If you dress them up with fancy components, they could surprise a lot of people. Hook and Hackle carries them and offers nice online order discounts. Their link is on the left. Utmost enterprises also has some great deals on closeout cosmetic blemished blanks. Others worth considering are Tiger Eye fly blanks (made by Sevier and sold by many of the sponsors). Those are my three votes for best inexpensive fly blanks.

I've played with the Forecast from Batson also; heck of a blank; cant believe they build 'em so nice and sell 'em so cheap!! I got the last one from Neal's (sponsor to the left). He was real good to work through.

I built a Forecast salmon/steelhead blank that is 9' long and rated for 4-8 lb. test. It is a lot of fun and is a great rod for crappie and even some bass. It has become one of my favorite spinning rods.

I have a related question about blanks, what is a clear matte finish?

Many of the All Stars are with this finish, Bruce. They're a matte gray (slate gray) color, but smooth and a clear finish, but not really glossy. I like the color and finish on this style blank.

Depends on the graphite :) What it really means is that whatever color the rod is coming from the oven, that is the color of the blank. The matte finish doesn't add any color, hence it is "clear". Overall like Putter said, they are usually a slate gray, but they can range from pretty dark, to pretty light.
