I found a fabric store in a town that I visit fairly often that carries Mettler Polysheen. I did a search for Mettler thread here and what I found was kinda limited. How does this thread stack up? I have only used Gudebrod and some Sulky Rayon(not a wrapping friendly product), I have not used Madeira or any other threads so when folks compare it Madeira it doesn't do much for me.

How does this thread compare to say Gudebrod for ease of use and color bleed through with CP. The Sulky Rayon works but it is so much extra work, it is not worth the effort. I am leery of buying the thread and then finding that it just like the Sulky rayon.

Scott, a fellow Aussie "Outback" uses the stuff, I'm sure he will chime in. If not you could do a search for him and email him direct. His name is Mark Fisher.

I've started experimenting with Mettler Polysheen when I wanted a more brilliant white thread. I have since purchased more colors and have been very happy with the way that it packs tightly, accepts CP and epoxy. To this point I've only used it on a practice blank but will wrap a rod with it soon.

I'm pretty sure that Polysheen is a relatively new product but a search of All Dates of Mettler hasn't revealed any problems yet. I've done the rayon route also so I was happy to see good results with Polysheen.

However let me offer this word of warning, I'm new to rod building so the experts that so generously provide advise may have a more valid opinion.

I have been using quite a bit of the Mettler Polysheen 40 for some time now and haven't yet found and major problems. The thread does have a real "sheen" to it and comes in a huge range of colours in 100m and 800m spools. I haven't yet done any bleed through techniques with the Mettler at this stage so I can't give you any idea how that will go. I would love to try a tartan with this thread. Try a couple of practise wraps and see. That's the best way. Some of the wraps I have done in this thread are over 12 months old and show no little sign of UV damage.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. I have been trying to find an alternative to Gudebrod for a while(limited colors) and I don't like to have to mail order everything. Having a store that I can visit to pick out colors is nicer than having to pick it out over the web or from a catalog.

I like to colors from Sulky but the stores around here only carry rayon and that is really not a good wrapping thread, too weak in is really hard to seal with CP. I have had success using it, but it is really hard to use. too much packing or if the tool slip it can and does at time break, not fun.
