What type of finish do I need to buy? Will exterior varnish work in a spray can? Re: Refinishing a 15' Rod

Chris, Are we talking Bamboo?? If so I have had satisfactory results with Minwax Gloss Extierior Polyurethane. However it's just not the same as a true spar varnish finish. No matter what you use be sure to remove all of the old finish first. If you plan on doing this often I suggest you find a copy of the Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook by Michael Sinclair. It a great starting place. Re: Refinishing a 15' Rod

Thanks for the reply. The rod is a fiberglass/graphite rod. The finish is in pretty bad shape. I didnt want to sand the remaining finish off until I was sure what I could use to refinish it. If you got any ideas I would appreciate it. Thanks for your time. Chris Re: Refinishing a 15' Rod

An exterior spray urethane product would be your best bet. On this and other boards I hear about the U40 permagloss being the best thing going for blank refinishing but you would have to brush it on and apparently it sets up really quick. I have repainted some yellow boat rods and then finished with a can of spray gloss exterior urethane and got darn nice results. The rods also seem to be holding up pretty well.
