wrapping motor

I just got a used Singer sewing machine motor with the hopes of making it in to a motor for wrapping. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to add the variable speed control or how to fashion a chuck to hold the rods?

hello dan you can get variable speed control frome ennui sewing macine shop.they are about $21.00 bucks new.the hook up will be with the control.as a chuck to hold the rod you can use pvc pipe caps anu use 3 screws with coverd end so they wont mar the finish.what i use is a wood lathe chuck i got from habor fright for $19.95 .i got tired of the home made stuff and got me a Renzetti.thats the way to go.well god luck Regards John

I use a sewing machine motor, but fo the chuck, I got the assembly from the pac-bay rod wrapper run off of the pulley that came on the motor I got, I made a wood support to hold the motor, I bought the motor and foot control together used from a sewing machine repair guy for about 20 bucks, the only complaint I have is that it starts up rather quickly, but this could be fixed by having a solid-state foot control, or a rheostat to slow it down.
