ZapAGap glue for tip top?

Hi All,

Being new to this great pursuit of building my own fishing rods, I was wondering if there might be any issue with using ZapAGap glue to hold the tiptop in place on the blamk? I'm building my third fly rod, a 2-piece Forecast 7'9", 3wt. If there are no concerns with this, would it also be okay to use on heavier weight fly rods? On my first two fly rods, I used hot glue from a glue gun but it didn't seem to hold on my current project.

Thanks in advance for any input.

I wouldn't use that (it might work, I've not actually tried it). Hot melt will work fine, but you've got to get some down into the tiptop tube. Just smearing it on the blank means that when you slide the tiptop on, you just push the glue down and off the joint there.

There are several ways to get hot melt into the tip. Some guys will cut a sliver of it with a razor and slide that down into the tube. I usually just put some on the blank tip, heat it, then work the tip into it to get some in the tube. When you make your tiptop trim wrap, carry the epoxy finish up and onto the tiptop tube by just a tad. That will lock it in place but you can easily remove the top with a little heat if you ever need to. And chrome pear fly tops may often need replacement.

5-minute epoxy is the other adhesive usually recommended for tiptop mounting. It can also be removed, usually, with a little heat if the need ever arises.

ZapAGap is a lot like superglue. once it dries, it gets brittle which is not good. Stick with hot melt. It's flexable which is a good thing in rod building. The other great thing about hot melt is that the tip can be readjusted later. Just add a little heat to re -adjust.

Thanks for the replies. Tom, I'll admit that I did exactly what your response says not to do and that is to apply the glue to the blank and then slide the tiptop on, hoping that it would stick. I'll try the hot glue again. As for the ZapAGap, thanks Peter for that bit of information on brittleness after drying; I'll leave that only for use in tying flies.

Heat your glue stick and dip the rod tip into the soft hot melt glue which forces some up into the tube, start tip on blank, hit it with torch again and it should bottom out, hit it with epoxy when applying finish. Jesse

Also, if you twist the tiptop around the blank tip a couple of times while the hot melt is still soft it will spread the hot melt for better coverage. Ralph

If at first you don't succeed, go fishing, then try, try again.

On the glue stick if your outside or rod locker tempeture gets above 120 degree's then you will want to use Gudebrod's glue sticks as they are rated for 180 degree's. Here in Arizona regular glue sticks won't work as the tips will come unglued.

Brad,
I wanted to send you a private e-mail but your e-mail is hidden. 'Tis ok wit me. Just not wanting to make too many posts here or beat a subject to death. But, you might consider using a single foot guide for a tip top instead of the traditional tubular slide on tip top. It has been recommended to me and I am going to do it on my first rod I am building. Least it eliminates the tube glue problem. Also if you use the same size as the previous ones to it on the rod the line should be in about as straight a plane as you could get it since they would all be the same size.

Hi Jim,

What I like most about this forum is the variety of answers you can get to a question -- all equally valid and likely backed up with experience. I imagine that most beginners like myself who find this website and forum appreciate the wide range of expertise offered. It's a great exercise for me, not having much of a background in hands-on work, and is helping me to think about the many ways and techniques used in building good, functional fishing rods.
Thanks for your input and I'm going to remember it for several rods I plan on building over the winter.
As for my e-mail address, I didn't know it was hidden and will fix it as soon as I figure out how to do that. The address I check from time to time is brad_lee@hotmail.com.

Cheers,
Brad

The ultimate dream of many online entrepreneurs is to build a
successful web site and then sell it for thousands, perhaps
millions of dollars. Example: Sergey Brin and Larry Page, the
original creators of google.com probably had no idea they would
become so rich by creating a search engine web site. Hey, stuffc [h1.ripway.com]
happens right? [xes-pon.orgfree.com]

Selling a domain name is easy. Selling a site that you have
poured months or years of your life into building, promoting and
nurturing, is a bit more difficult. If you care about what
you've built and want to see it continue to succeed and grow, it
can be as difficult as selling one of your own children.
[xes-pon.orgfree.com]
Scenario: You are approached by someone who is interested in
purchasing your web site. Your first thought is that it's some
joke but you find it to be a genuine proposal. An offer is made
and negotiations begin.
[xes-pon.orgfree.com]

Stop! If the sale involves more than a couple thousand dollars,
it is in your best interest to get an attorney. Do this before
any contracts are signed or any money changes hands or you could [xes-pon.orgfree.com]
lose the proverbial "shirt off your back" AND the web site you
built so carefully.
