On a casting rod most of the time you see the guides on the top of the rod. On a spiral wrap they go around and end up on the bottom. Hence the term "spiral" because they spiral around the blank to get to the bottom.

It is also called a Roberts Wrap. I built a Flounder Rod this way and I love It
