Hello, I will soon be stationed in Cordova, Alaska and would like to build a couple halibut rods. Could someone please recommend a model or two? How about handles for the same? Thank you very much Greg Bigler Re: blanks for halibut

I have done very little of this type fishing but did go once upon a time. We seemed to have used some pretty hefty rods. I think they were back bouncing type blanks. Loomis BB965 I think. They were 8' and very, very powerful. Maybe somebody who builds these type rods can help you out a bit better than I can. Really haven't done enough of this type fishing to know all the ins and outs of it. Re: blanks for halibut

I have a friend how's going in a couple of week and just picked up a Shimano TLD30II 2 speed reel with 300yds 65# spectra backing and 100 yds50# or 60# topshot. I think he will be coupling it with a standup 30(50)80# tuna stick made from a Calstar GF760XL or a GF765L, 6.5'. The shorter rod givrs the lever advantage to the angler. They're usually built with an aluminum gimbal and reel seat with a 10-12" hypalon butt grip and a 12-16" hypalon foregrip. You've got your choice of AFTCO roller guides or "turbo"CLRLG/LRSG guides with tips to match. hope that helps Jim Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
