Have been using size a metallic thread and am not happy with the way the tag end looks when pulled under to lock in place. For some reason it is very pronounced. As in you can see exactly where it was pulled under and where it stops.

Am I doing something wrong or using an incorrect thread. Its like the thread is so thin that you can see everything under the wrap.

I looked at a couple rods I did years ago and could slightly see where the end was pulled, but nothing like what im getting today.

Any ideas ??

9ft 8wt cold weather guide sizing choice (3 replies)

Was hoping some of you more experienced guys could lend a hand. I am building a 9ft 8wt fly rod for a friends father. He is looking to use it on trips. He will be fishing cold weather (Alaska) to warm weather (local saltwater). I was thinking of using oversized guides so they would be less resistant to freezing.

I am using double foot strippers and double foot snake guides for the build.

After looking at some other resources I have calculated that the normal sized guides for this rod should be 20-16-4-4-4-2-2-2-1-1 with a 4 or 4.5 tip top. (He wants to two larger stripping guides so it is similar to the TFO rods)

Will I see any benefit from increasing the guide sizes? If so what sizes should I use.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

The power wrapper I built has been working very well... Makes quick work of long butt wrapps. My issue is that I still need to have the ability to turn the rod by hand as well. My wrapper uses a DC drill motor which has a 2 speed gear box. So when all the belts etc are attached and the rod is tight in the chuck you cannot spin the rod.

I was thinking about possibly using some type of electromagnetic clutch out of a copy machine. Just not sure how I would do it.

My grandfather has an old Hawk Grip (HawkGrip) Graphite Medium Action Egg Rod 9.5' 2-piece Salmon Trout... well that's what it says on the rod! Oh, and Model SP1741-96 :P

Now I can't wait to use a nice long rod... but it's broken clean apart 71cm from the tip... almost exactly 1/4 down the rod. I suspect this is a region that sees a lot of flex, so the repair might be a bit daunting.

I need advise from a seasoned rod craftsman about what to do with this rod.

Here are pictures of the damage (yes, on a crappy camera but it's what I had at the time :P)
Tip was also damaged, but my grandfather improperly repaired it years ago, he didn't know any better unfortunately :(.

I'm just starting my first spinning rod build and I am having a time with the spacing.
The ngc guide system puts my choke about 13" from the tip, and with only three reduction guides between the reel and the choke, there is a significant amount of space between all of them. They all line up like a bulls eye great when sighting down the rod, so I feel confident they are spaced correctly.
My issue really is only that the space between the last reduction guide and the choke seems farther than I like to see when static testing. also I am ending up with 6 or 7 guides depending on whether I decide to go with three or four runners, not sure if that's too few.
What do you more expierienced builders suggest? Add another reduction guide? Move the choke?
The blank is a st croix 3S68MXF

I recently gave away a nice 4'6" Browning spinning rod to a friends son. I want to replace it with a build. I am looking for some blank suggestions. My critieria is that I want the same small size, as light as I can get away with for 3 to 4lb Brook trout. I had a quick look on Mudhole but didn't see much except a one St. Croix blank. I already have several St.Croix blanks and I like them but am always looking to build rods with different makers to feel the differences they offer myself.

Does anyone have a suggestion for me. I like my ultra light rods to provide me a sense they are being use to their maximum limits. Again I am not looking to break the bank on this blank I use it twice a year.

I recently broke my favorite fishing rod. I got the blank replaced, but I had a lot of time and work in this rod, and thought I'd try to salvage it. I posted a photo series in the miscellaneous section at:

Maybe it will help someone else if it works. I'd like to hear from some of you who have repaired rods what you think. It looks great, and doesn't seem to affect the action. I guess the first big redfish will be the test. My biggest concern is whether the plug was too big or too small, or whether it will even hold right in the power section of the rod.

I was going over the contracts for the two host hotels (Marriot & Embassy Suites) for the upcoming Expo next February. One of the things I noticed is that they are including a full "cooked to order" breakfast as part of the special room rates offered to Expo attendees.

More information later next week on the hotels and room rates. These are both exceptional hotels, both top of the class of their respective companies. Please do not attempt to book rooms this early, however, as the special rates and fulfillment policies will not be in place for a few weeks yet.

Sometime next week the RodMaker blog will have full details on accommodations and pricing. Thanks.

possible problem with mfg. (14 replies)

I had bought a supply of epoxy and other goods all made by the same mgf. from a dealer. Shortly after that I ran into problems with a portion of the epoxy and contacted the dealer to see about a replacement. They said to contact the mfg. as they were no longer dealing with her products or could not get them any longer or something. I have spent the better part of three weeks making phone calls and sending E-mails to this mfg. but have yet to receive a single response. I know the E-mail is good because they are not bouncing back. The phone message still has her recording so it has not been disconnected. If this was just a few dollars worth of product I would not waste any time on it but it amounts to what for me is a significant investment. I have heard all sorts of rumors about legal troubles forcing this mfg. out of business or bankruptcy, etcetera. I have not seen anything like that appear in public so I wrote it off to just being rumors. But I cannot get any direct communication going so I have begun to wonder whats up. Do any of you know any way to find out if a mfg. or company is still in business? Do any states maintain a contact listing of businesses that are operational? Not sure what to do. Any help is appreciated.

Building agate guides - line guide frames, tooling (5 replies)

Hello all,
I'm interested in possibly building my own line guides with agate inserts. I see where agate inserts are advertised to be sold separately. Does anybody know...

A) Are agate inserts bonded and / or crimped in place in the lineguide frames? And is there special tooling available to do this?

B) Does anyone know a source for purchasing the frames only... to install agate inserts into?

C) Does anyone know a source for someone who does custom work... where I could specify size and material to get a matching set?

D) I'm also looking for a source for gold plated casting rod tip tops (no agate), titanium frame casting rod tip-tops (no agate), nickel silver casting rod tip-tops (no agate), to match existing agate line guides commercially available. (The tip top can be with or without an agate insert; just looking to create a set with matching frames). Typical tube sizes are 5.5, 6.0 and 7.0

Any suggestions welcome. Thanks!

I wonder if anyone has tried painting a guide in bright gold finish.
My problem is thus: I have some nice gold plated SIC boat guides but no matching tip. This color on a sturdy boat tip now appear to be unavailable out there.

Soooo....I'm thinking get out the rattle can and get to work. Any other tips/experiences out there? Words of caution?

Hello everyone. A newbie rod builder here with a simple question I hope to start things off.

Can anyone provide some feedback on the difference between the Fuji MN versus the LN frames please? I'm going to build some bait casters and was thinking of going for the TLNSG ones on one rod but also like the ICMNSG and ICLNSG guides so may try a few sets. I might even go for the CMNAG. will the ICLNSG or TLNSG be strong enough for a 25 lb Barra bait caster? are the Titanium guides worth the extra? Weight comes secondary to corrosion resistance in this case. I'm just looking for some top quality guides with a shiny frame that don't rust.
Thanks.
