I have always used a hand wrapper, the same old flex coat one in fact. It is strating to fall apart now and i am in the market for a new wrapper. I have considered buying a power one but I am cheap and am used to a hand wrapper. My top two choicres now are the pacbay power wrapper and flex coat speed wrapper1 for the hand. I have gotten fast enough by hand were I can almost beat a power wrapper. Are there any advantages other than speed with the power one?

I was in a local Sporting goods shop and couldn't help but to look at the new rods as usual.

I seen a casting factory rod that had a split grip no forgrip set up. As usual the reel seat threads were too long, but, they figured a way to compensate for that, and it was kinda neat really. They had the standard reel seat hood holding on the reel and it was followed by an EVA (the whole split grip was EVA) cover that screwed up right behind the reel seat hood and just covered the reel seat threads perfectly. Just something kinda neat I've never seen before. It was a Field and Stream Tech Spec rod. Heck of a bargain I thought for $59.00.....not that I'd own one! LOL
This reel can handle up to 40lb test line...or at least that is the last specification given for the reel. I talking with this person, he said he has 15lb power pro put on the reel already and that he would not be using anything over 20lb. He throws the smaller mirror lures or rapallas, but often uses shrimp or cut bait. Personally, I would have a smaller reel...but it is what it is. Obviously, this is salt water. Any thoughts would be appreicated. Clinton

This may be a dumb question. Please bare with me. I was asked to refurb two older boat rods. Both have what I think are pale blue Hypalon grips on the butts and fore areas. I don't think this stuff is EVA, it's sort of heavy and spongy but has a hard crust on the outside surface. The owner said they did not use to be this way but were soft on the outside. I was thinking about soaking them in baby oil or something. Or would it be better to lightly sand the outside crust and try to get down into good material again? I just don't have any experience with Hypalon.

Gluing foam checker pieces (13 replies)

So I did my first set of eva checker rings....They came out ok....A few things though. When gluing them up I used contact adhesive on both sides pressed them together for a few minutes, then on to the next one..After all pieces were glued I used rubber bands to ''clamp'' them over night...After that I sanded and cut them into 1/8'' rings...
The pieces I glued were about an 1'' long so I could cut multiple rings.

Here are the concerns...One,I could still see the glue lines meaning I either used too much adhesive or didnt clamp them tight enough??
Two,the edges where the two different colors meet still feel ''cornered''...I sanded it round but it felt sort of octagon shaped...Does that make sense?

So Im curious on some other methods I should try for a better outcome...Also,a good contact adhesive recommendation...The one I use is good but I think it dries too hard leaves hard lines.

Thanks guys!

I have a rod that I am doing some work on.
It is the 2nd or 3rd rod I made. I made this rod for my brother in 1974 or 1975. The chevron has come loose and broken in a few places. All of the Guide wraps are intact, it is just the chevron that is "bad". He told me "do not change the guide wraps just the butt wrap". I have taken the chevron thread off and am now I am going to redo the wrap, the under wrap is OK so am not plannng on removing it.

The finish I used on it the first time was Varnish. As I remember I put on 8 or 10 coats of varnish. Over time the varnish has "disappeared". It feels like there is only CP on the threads now.
The real question is.......can I put an other type of finish over the varnish? I will reapply finish on the guide wraps too.

thanks

Im confused on size and placement of butt guide on a spinning rod.822.5 rainshadow.I see a lot of guys using a 16 butt guide. If I use the 27x method that guide is pretty much predetermined if I stay in the recommended 18-22 in. from reel face.Looks to me like the only way to use a smaller ring ,which will be a shorter height ,is to move farther from reel face ,to stay in contact with my projected line path. Are there higher framed guides Im not aware of,BYAG,or are these guys using some method other than 27x? Thanks My rig is wanting a BYAG 25 and nothing wrong with using that ,just wondering how I could use something smaller to try.
